All About Mossy Head FL

You might be at risk of missing Mossy Head while traveling Highway 10 in the Florida Panhandle. That’d be a shame, as it’s located only a few miles east from the 285 exit meeting Highway 90. Located in northwestern Walton County, the unincorporated community is so named for a Shoal River tributary, the Mossy Head Branch. It’s also just north of Eglin Air Force Base. Mossy Head Branch widens in town into a y-shaped, narrow lake.

Mossy Head served for roughly thirty years since 1951 as an interchange point for Eglin Air Force Base’s railroad, the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. However, the community’s 17,679 citizens almost exclusively take the car to work, given the absence of the railway since the 1980’s.

The community boasts a school, a community center, a First Baptist Church, and a grocery store. The school is a K-5 elementary school growing its Volunteer Pre-K program. Nearby Mossy Head Park has plenty of space for children to play, including slides, monkey bars, climbing ropes, and a water feature where children can cool off.

If you’re hungry while visiting the town, there are two locally-owned restaurants, Simply Good BBQ and Kelly’s Place. Favored flavors at the BBQ joint are BBQ pork, sausage, chicken on a bun, smothered fried chicken, country fried steak, and corn dogs. Note they only take cash and they’re closed Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays evenings. Kelly’s also serves country fried steak along with omelets, smoked sausage, grits, BLTs, Reubens, and corned beef hash. They’re open seven days a week.

Golf fans may enjoy 18 holes at Blackstone Golf Course on the eastern side of town. There are frequent events on their schedule, and seasonal specials for those looking for a deal. After playing a round, there’s the Blackstone Grill where burgers, sandwiches, and snacks are the menu. Walton Home Solutions is proud to offer custom built homes to Mossy Head FL.
