On the western tip of Okaloosa County on Florida’s Emerald Coast is the major fishing destination Destin. Destin is mostly along US 98 and is accessible from the north from Florida 293 across the Choctawatchee Bay. The town is about an hour and fifteen minutes east of Pensacola and roughly the same distance west of Panama City. There are 14,077 full-time residents, per the 2018 U.S. Census, and those numbers swell dramatically towards around 40,000 during the tourist season.
Settled from 1845 to 1850 by fishing captain Leonard Destin, the city saw strong growth in the 1980’s and is a popular tourist destination. It had been made up of islands, but hurricanes connected the islands to the mainland over time. Visitors come to explore the beach parks, including June White Decker, Norreigo Point, Shore at Crystal Beach, Henderson, and James Lee Park. All of the beaches are located along the Gulf of Mexico or, in the case of Norriego Point, just within the East Pass between the Gulf and the Bay. The sand in the area is famously white.
Other visitors may be drawn to the area’s numerous golf courses, such as Indian Bayou Golf and Country Club, Kelly Plantation Golf Club, Regatta Bay Golf and Yacht Club, and Emerald Bay Golf Club.
For those who love fishing, Destin has had a long tradition of heading out to sea to haul in a bounty of seafood. The Destin History and Fishing Museum provides mounts of 75 locally caught fish, historical artifacts, photos, and exhibit information on the area’s fishing roots.
The fishing industry in Destin, founded by Captain Destin, has caused the community to be known as the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village.” The fleet is Florida’s largest, possibly because the 100 fathom cuve is closest to Destin, allowing fast access to deep-water fishing.
